Polymer Composite Acronyms

Nowdays, many terms have been used to define Fibres Reinforced Composites.

Modifiers have been used to identify a specific fiber such as;

-Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP)
-Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP)
-Aramid Fiber Reinforced Polymer (AFRP)
-Reinforced Thermoplastics (RTP)
-Glass Mat Thermoplastics (GMT)

Another common term that been used all over the world is Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP). This make our life easier instead of saying the long "Fiber Reinforced Plastics " term, we can just say as FRP and everyone in the composite world will understand it.

In addition to that, other acronyms were developed over the years and its use depended on geographical location or market use. For example;

-Fiber Reinforced Composites (FRC)
-Glass Reinforced Plastics (GRP) or Fibreglass
-Polymer Matrix Composites (PMC)

These terms and acronyms can be found in many references. Although it have different name, each of mentioned terms mean the same thing; FRP composites.

Definition of Composite

"A homogeneous material created by the synthetic assembly of two or more materials (a selected filler or reinforcing elements and compatible matrix binder) to obtain specific characteristics and properties"

In simple word, a composite material is a combination of 2 or more material that gave a certain properties.

I wonder how many engineers realize the importance of material as alternative material to their product. Well, usually composite material are more costly, but then, it has an ountstanding properties depending on application.

Intro To The Polymer Composite Technology Blog

First of all, I found that there are not many blog that discuss about polymer & composite technology.

This blog is created to discuss and educate all earthlings about composite technology especially in polymer composite.

I hope we can discuss and gain a lot of knowlege from this blog.

Thank you
